12:08 p.m. Dec 11, 1997 Eastern

MIAMI, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A ribbon cutting ceremony attended by some of
the Latin American IT industry's most important leaders, kicked-off
COMDEX/Miami's second year. With 300 exhibitors and attendance on track to
break show records, COMDEX/Miami '97 is the largest tri-lingual information
technology show focused on Latin America.

During the inauguration ceremony, Miami Beach's Commissioner, Simon Cruz,
proclaimed December 9-11, COMDEX/Miami Day in the city of Miami Beach.

"The tremendous increase in the number of visitors clearly demonstrates Miami's
unique positioning as the Capital of Latin America," said Jose Chao, show director
for COMDEX/Miami. "The number of attendees to this year's show has surpassed
our expectations, with a significant increase over last year's conference attendance
and strong international attendance."

Show keynotes focused on strategic steps for success in the Latin American IT and
telecom industries. During Tuesday's keynote address, Howard Anderson,
managing director of The Yankee Group outlined the three "Is" of Latin American
IT opportunities: infrastructure, integration and the Internet. Anderson explained
how the wireless boom is the fastest growing telecom market segment in Latin
America.

On Wednesday, Bruce Claflin, senior vice president and general manager for
worldwide sales and marketing, Digital Equipment Corporation, addressed how
companies are making the transition toward a global economy in Latin America and
how they are forced to develop new business strategies in order to make them
more competitive.

Other COMDEX/Miami highlights included announcements from CNN
Interactive, 3Com and BellSouth.
CNN Interactive launched
CNNenEspanol.com the CNN News Group's seventh web site and its first
Spanish language news web site. 3Com Corporation announced the
OfficeConnect(R) NETBuilder(R) 13x series of routers with full
routing and security features designed to help enterprises extend
cutting-edge Intranets to the remote sites and develop Virtual
Private Networks (VPNs).
BellSouth also announced its new program
"Miami Goes Electronic," which will enable small and medium sized
businesses to have global marketing possibilities available to them.

"With more than 22 countries represented, 25,000 visitors expected and 300
exhibitors, COMDEX/Miami is the premier gathering place for the IT industry here
in the hub of the Americas region," adds Chao.
