Some possible reasons for announcing this:

1) Marketing blitz. That story is really getting around. I saw it in my local paper about 1/2 hour before you posted.

2) Control the info. Confirm the size of the hoard and rarity of some of the pieces. Else someone might think they have more of the rare onces stashed away.

3) Ego! ;)
