The gunmen - who raided Simferopol international airport early on Friday in the capital of Crimea - - left the territory, the airport spokesman told Echo Moscow radio.

Igor Stratilati said the group obviously arrived at the airport thinking Ukrainian airborne troops touched down there. However, after seeing that there were no army on the tarmac, they apologised and retreated.

Stratilati confirmed that the airport is working as usual. [Echo Moscow]
