Ice, your best bet is the Malkiel book for a general discussion. All of the references I gave you discuss it in one sense or another. Remember that TA and random walk are logically inconsistant with one another, so anything that shows that the market follows a random walk argues that TA cannot provide any meaningful information.

Look at chapter 6 in Malkiel, and he gives a bunch of references at the end of the book that speak to specific T/A techniques.

Regards,

Paul

Ice:

Chapter Six in the Malkiel book is devoted to a critique of TA; then he takes on FA in the next chapter. He really is a "buy-and-hold" devotee.

The FOOL brothers, Tom and David Gardner, also unleash a broadside at TA, altho in a much more humorous way. They have a chapter on the "Leibniz pre-Harmonic Oscillator" which is pretty funny. Of course, they are notorious "buy-and-holders" (at least for a year).

FWIW Dept: Personally, I think TA is quite useful as it gives you an index of market psychology or sentiment. And in today's market, I think that is quite useful. Today, I was able to back out of FLC, BDI, HLX and then get back in -- particularly for FLC, quite a bit lower. It works for me (at least more often than not). Of course, for the "buy and hold" crowd, a 50 day MA is irrelevant -- so of course it doesn't work for them.

Go with whatever gets you through the nite!
