I use a Samsung Chromebook as my traveler..

I would not have gone this way without being a dedicated Chrome/Google user

As such, I find my usage nearly seamless with my Windows machines

It does all of my online stuff such as Ancestry, SI, Gmail and of course Google search and Wikipedia same as my desktop

Ironically, for me, the most significant loss is access to Google Earth

Yes, but if you are buying enough for an entire school district it adds up. If there could be some sort of financing mechanism to let the kids buy and own the chromebooks themselves this would hopefully solve Epicure's "takehome' problem.
