Lithography Market May Double

SAN JOSE, CA-A rapidly growing market for thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) will cause the demand for
lithography equipment to double in size and triple in value over the next six years, according to a market analysis and industry report published in October by Stanford Resources.

In LCD Manufacturing Materials and Equipment 1997, a six-chapter report on the worldwide LCD industry, Stanford Resources forecasts that demand for equipment to expose large-area substrates will increase from 69 units valued at $242 million in 1997 to 138 units valued at $776 million by 2003. Rapid growth in lithography equipment and several other markets
detailed in the report will be driven by correspondingly rapid growth in demand for TFT-LCDs, from 26.7 million units in 1997 to
almost 86 million in 2003.

Through the end of the 1990s, the primary application for TFT-LCDs will be in portable computers, which will account for 10.1 million units in 1997. Desktop LCD monitors and camcorder viewfinders are expected to stimulate significant growth in the next decade, however.

The demand for supertwisted-nematic (STN) LCDs is also expected to grow from 35.3 million units in 1997 to more than 61 million units in 2003. That demand, however, is expected to shift into low-cost monochrome applications as consumers move toward the superior image quality available with TFT-LCDs. By the middle of 1997, TFT-LCDs had already captured more than 75% of the notebook market in the US, according to the report.

Despite its projections of substantial growth, the LCD industry report "is not intended to provide a best-case scenario but rather "is not intended to provide a best-case scenario but rather a usable forecast of materials and equipment trends," according to the executive summary, which lists six goals:

Forecasting the worldwide market for LCD materials and equipment based on demand for STN-LCDs and TFT-LCDs through 2003.

Analyzing the supply side in terms of factor capacity, sizes, and production, using both existing fabs and announced future facilities.

Forecasting demand for materials, such as glass on substrates, color filters, polarizers, liquid-crystal material, alignment-layer material, and row/column driver chips.

Forecasting demand for equipment, such as tools for lithography, chemical-vapor deposition, physical-vapor deposition, coating, etching, testing, and final inspection.

Identifying TFT-LCD-fab production capacity and forecasting future demand.

Profiling developers and manufacturers of LCD materials and equipment.
