The brilliance of our rule book came when Jefferson struck the word "sacred" and added the term "self evident" with regard to truth. It blocked the religious and atheists from arguing about whether particular things or anything is sacred. But everyone easily accepts things that seem commonly self evident, requiring no proof in the empirical sense.

It starts to fall apart when you politicize it for social control though (eugenics, food, prohibitions, global warming, economics, etc.).
