Yes, I should have said that if anything, teaching methods have improved, as has the available technology.

We have better schools, worse parents, and a far worse job market.

Agree with the first and last of these, particularly your terrific commentary on the quality of schools today.

My own take on all this, hardly worth getting too far into debate, is that the schools are better but it's extremely uneven. Rural and some urban schools have not improved largely because the constrained taxing environment and concomitant growing income inequality has left them behind. We need a very large national campaign to put more money into those sectors. Rather than the present Obama campaign for more money for testing and charter schools.
