Because you, I assume, like I, grew up mostly in pre-welfare for any unmarried woman environment (under a certain income) and, if your experience was like mine, I wonder how you came to change your mind about it--that is that the abundance of single parents of today is a good thing for the country (or least funding them is a good thing in your view) as to opposed as to how the mostly absence of such (single parents) was a good thing, mostly, for the country in the 50's.
