Neeka, I used to buy low cost XP computers, add memory and keep them a long time. 7 years for the last one, which still ran when I put it out of its misery. Last summer I decided to treat myself to a desktop that was a bit more expensive and much better. Half a year later I still enjoy the browser opening in seconds and same for spread sheets and word processors. Over 4 years the extra money spent comes to a dollar a week.

Live a little :)

[Windows 8.1, Intel core i5, 8GB, 1TB]
I don't do games and few videos.
Win 8 for me works much like XP - only better and faster.
I see the metro interface [tiles] maybe once a week - for a search

I'll do the same, but I'll wait for the next iteration of 8.

I have a program that turns the raw Win8 into an interface of Win7 on a cheapo laptop. It works very well, but it doesn't have a touchscreen.
