Nuclear generation typically contributes 18-20% of total U.S. power generation
with the remainder primarily split between natural gas and coal followed by
hydropower. In 2014, even with higher nuclear generation to date due to extreme
cold weather driving nuclear capacity utilization to well-above normal levels,
nuclear power output is projected drop sharply, on average, versus last with a
record number of nuclear plants scheduled for maintenance this spring.
