"All Rand's arguments ultimately rest on unsupportable assertions. Thousands of species have gone extinct. The Universe doesn't care if Man survives or not."

Rand does not assert anything against those two examples. Don't be stupid.

"If you don't like the dictionary definition of a word because it fails to meet your self serving purpose that's too bad."

I like the dictionary just fine. You are either being ignorant or dishonest. Rand pointed out very clearly: "the exact meaning and dictionary definition of the word "selfishness" is: concern with one’s own interests.

"This concept does not include a moral evaluation; it does not tell us whether concern with one’s own interests is good or evil; nor does it tell us what constitutes man’s actual interests. It is the task of ethics to answer such questions."

In other words (and please try to follow--ok?)--the dictionary definition does not suggest "murderous brutes who trample over piles of corpses to achieve their own ends, who care for no living being and pursue nothing but the gratification of the mindless whims of any immediate moment."

Rand tells us how she understands rational self interest. As she says, it is the task of ethics to tell us how we ought to value concern with one's interests.
