How about the fear of God and judgment?

Annihilation? That's not fearful, there are religions that pose that as the goal to be achieved.

<<
Fear, fear of the unknown, fear of being alone & always fear of death & annihilation. >>

With all due respect, I don't think it is fear. I think it is more like imprinting. A child gets imprinted with these myths at an early age and it is like putting a virus in a computer that you can never get completely out. It greatly impedes their ability to grow and think. True of any dogma to some extent. When taught at a young age.

Look at the problem from a statistical perspective. Take the Romney family. Every single one of them believes that nonsense. They are not all equally afraid, what they have in common is their imprinting by their family at an early age.

With education many get out, but even those have lingering fears, not about death (although the harsher ones is about going to hell) , but about maybe there is a god and he will be mad. You will really see this in the more fundamental indoctrination among the poor uneducated, or more fundamental religions e.g. Catholics, Islam, and fundamental Baptists and Jews.

PS one way a person can know this is nonsense is a god would never be mean like that and threaten children
with hell fire and damnation. Another way is to know a god would never want a poor illiterate person to sacrifice for them, or be so caught up in believing in them, or praying or even think like us.

A tribal chief would, on the other hand. Which I exactly what the big three religions are describing. Tribal chiefs.

Gods are omnipotent, omnipresent , sentient beings like that think differently than we do.

"Have gotten these local bible thumpers to do their "big reveal" , its the death card all the way with them, what's going to happen to you in the "after life"

Their "morality" is based on their fear and ignorance--indeed...their selfishness. Not rational selfishness where people know their interests are furthered by honesty, cooperation, and other such benevolent virtues...but irrational selfishness where they will do anything to live forever and to avoid being tortured forever. Too simple minded for words. Really...it beggars belief. :-(
