SI doesn't "pick" the specific ads but they do willfully abet and are paid for the dissemination of said ads. Unless they don't view their own site.

Below is a typical Google Adsense ad. Note the symbol in the upper right of the ad that allows you to filter the type of ads you want to see. I mention this because the ad that Stock Dung posted did not have that symbol for some reason, implying it may not have been an Adsense ad.
