BALTIMORE —Baltimore City police said they hope some surveillance video helps them find the man who mugged a 70-year-old woman in the southwest part of the city over the weekend.

Footage from a CityWatch crime camera showed the robber creeping up on and wrestling the woman to the ground near South Stricker Street between West Baltimore and Hollins streets around 5:15 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said the woman was calling for someone to help with her flat tire when the man attacked and stole her cellphone.

In September, a deputy solicitor general for the Attorney General's Office was shot in the stomach during a robbery attempt while he was walking from his car to his home in the same area. Police said they're still searching for two men in that case and have made no arrests.

Neighbors said the recent crimes have them shaken up.

"What's even sadder is when you are accosted by these criminals or thugs, you give them what they want, and they still get physical. I mean, a 70-year-old woman? Come on. The woman could have been -- I'm sure she's somebody's grandmother," said neighbor Lemuel Murray.

Police said the man in the 70-year-old's case was black, about 6 feet tall, and he was wearing a black jacket and khaki pants. Investigators believe he may work or have family or friends in the area.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call police at 410-396-2504.

Baltimore City Police Officer Charged With Beating And Killing Girlfriend’s 7-Month-Old Puppy

March 5, 2014 11:22 PM

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJZ) — A shocking case of animal cruelty out of Montgomery County, where a Baltimore City cop is accused of choking his girlfriend’s dog to death.

The officer—a five-year veteran with the force—is suspended without pay after beating the dog with a mop and strangling it to death.

For five years, Baltimore City police officer Alec Eugene Taylor has protected and served the city of Baltimore—until now. He is charged with animal cruelty and abuse.

According to Montgomery County police, 27-year-old Taylor killed his girlfriend’s seven-month-old Jack Russell Terrier, named Rocko, for relieving himself on the carpet of their Silver Spring apartment.

“I think he should be put in jail for a long time,” said one man.

Taylor tells investigators he used a mop not only to retrieve the dog from behind the dryer but as a weapon to beat the helpless animal before using his bare hands to choke the dog to death.

Montgomery County police say the Baltimore City cop then took a picture of the dead dog and actually sent it to his girlfriend before dumping the pup in a dumpster.

“I think that is really sad because I love animals, mostly dogs, because dogs are my favorite,” said one person.

In a statement, Baltimore City police officials say, “Allegations of animal cruelty are taken seriously by the Baltimore police department. Significant emphasis has been placed on training investigators to handle animal abuse incidents in Baltimore.”

Investigators say Taylor told his girlfriend he was sick of cleaning up after the dog.

Taylor turned himself into police on Wednesday.

At the request of his girlfriend, Taylor retrieved the dog from the dumpster and she buried it in a park.
