It is a weird day that I find myself in agreement with Al, but what you apparently don't comprehend is that it is better to prevent a conflict than to encourage one. The idea of escalation in that region would be to give foreign leaders pause before they become aggressive and thereby avoid a conflict altogether that otherwise might have developed.
