Plato was no a believer in a god.

He said: "let those who cannot understand count beads". (paraphrased).

The shadows on the cave wall are the illusion we live in. It is outside the cave---outside the dogma where reality is!

But when the man tried to tell the people in the cave (believers) what he saw outside the cave they killed him.

Just like the church use to do in the middle ages to heretics (non believers)! It killed them.
