i do not know the magic number the producers need to experience before they really upside their drilling programs by a lot. however i think if they see they can get $6 in the out years in the futures market, they will get a move on.

let us not forget this is actually mining shale for ng and oil. they know where the shale mine is, and they know how to extract the products in small percentage amounts today. they can turn on the spigot anytime the price for the product is right given the current state of the art. over time better and better technology and techniques will increase the productivity of the shale mining process. that will reduce costs and increase the percentage of ng and oil the shale mine will deliver. over time the price of the ng product may be very profitable at lower prices, but for the current state of the art the price needs to be quite a bit higher to get a flood again.
