At one point those of Mexican decent doing well were considered more 'white' than the more recent southern and eastern European immigrants of the day who were dirt poor plus looked and sounded the part. Definition of whiteness changes but those with the green ultimately make the rules Thus the stupid political division based on social issues constantly gets today's very poor white class in small town American constantly voting against their own self interests. Plutocrats continue to win till liberals figure out how to get that more rural white vote. It is people who speak like you, me, a Brian Schweitzer or a Jesse Ventura who can get that vote IMHO
