"I get burned every time I try to do something at the opening, plus
almost everybody you read advises to wait until the opening blast is past"

I find that most of the time the stock will move in a matter of seconds after the "opening".I have missed many trades that way.I tried to buy more ORCL less than 1 min after the opening and it was gone without me.

"Today, I
shorted AMAT about 10:05 and got out close to 4 at exactly the same price!"

I thought you meant what to do if you wanted to "buy" one of these stocks. If AMAT had gone down enough I would have bought it not short it.

"Do you put your 9:30 a.m. order in at
market? Do you always do it that way, or just when there is big news and big

before the bell movement? What broker do you use?"

When it gets close to 9:30 the bid and ask get close together so I will put it in at the ask.I always get the ask that is displayed at 9:30 even if it is less than my limit.
I am only talking about big moves on news at the opening.
I use Spartian(Fidelity)
