IKM, here's some Yahoo! 101:

When you search using a keyword like "books" or "car", the banner that comes up on the results page is for an ad paid for by whoever leased the keyword. That's my understanding of how it works. The actual content that comes up has been pre-selected by the Yahoo! staff.
