et tu, Netscape? Netscape's Internet marketplace goes live MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec 10 (Reuters) - Netscape Communications Corp. goes live Thursday with its Internet marketplace, joining other prominent Web sites aiming to ring up sales this holiday season. Netscape said its Netcenter Marketplace includes books from Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN - news), music from N2K Inc.'s (Nasdaq:NTKI - news) Music Boulevard and access to discount products from CUC International's (NYSE:CU - news) Netmarket. The new commerce site, which will compete with those launched in recent weeks by Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) and Excite Inc. (Nasdaq:XCIT - news) among others, also boasts more than 800 software products from more than 220 developers through its Netscape Software Depot by software.net.Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Netscape's Web site, said the company is also announcing that membership of its Netcenter online service, which it launched a little more than three months ago, has hit 2 million. This is up from 1.7 million in mid-November. Bailey said the number of visitors to Netscape's overall site rose by about 40 percent from January through November of this year, and she projected that the new commerce sections of the site would produce a ''pretty substantial, healthy chunk of revenue.'' Netscape, which in 1996 began an aggressive program of selling ''real estate'' on its Netscape Navigator browser used to view and navigate the World Wide Web, has been increasingly reliant on growth from selling content as well as its Internet-related software. Bailey noted that Web services, including content as well as professional services and technical support, accounted for 28 percent of the company's revenues in the third quarter and $26 million came from Web site content. The Netcenter Marketplace includes a guarantee that it said supplements fraud protection offered by credit card companies, and covers up to $50 in customers' personal liability in event of unauthorized card usage. The site also features Netscape logo and software products, and utilizes security features of Netscape's software to perform encrypted transactions. The site includes a search feature to find products on sale, a Hot Deal section for specials and promotions, and a streamlined order checkout process to help make it more convenient for customers to purchase products. The software section continues Netscape's ''try before you buy'' feature and enables software to be easily bought over the Internet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
