The invention of writing codified the fireside tales that make up the bible. Once they were written down they could no longer evolve or change. Then you get a bunch of clerical types who have nothing better to do than read the book instead of being part of the larger story. Since the book they are reading is full of contradictions you get differing opinions and all of them clamouring for attention claiming their version of the book is the true one. The book helps them justify that their ignorance is as good as your knowledge.
