Every country in the world would have every incentive to cancel their debt payments to us AND then we would have no one to borrow from. What then?

Then we would be in Republican Nirvana--unable to borrow, wouldn't be able to run up any debt, be FORCED to live within our means AT LAST!!!

What could be wrong with that?

"borrow all the money we can, then we declare bankruptcy"

Sounds sorta like me, but I wait for bankruptcy until it becomes a case of "no longer able to pay", which I don't expect to happen, unless we break up into pieces.

IIRC, the interest rates were like effectively -1% at the time.

"we would have no one to borrow from. What then? "

We'd say, "So this is what it looks like when global civilization collapses." Then most of us would try to catch and eat the 0.01%.
