There is a reason why Russians are drinking themselves to death and have one of the shortest average lifespans in Europe.

The problem is that their government is a kleptocracy and controlled by oligarchs. And ours is being dominated more and more by oligarchs. The problem with a government controlled by oligarchs is that more and more of the economy gets put into fewer and fewer hands. Nepotism runs rampart, as we are seeing. For the rest, they get trapped in amber and can only hold steady or face declining circumstances.

Luckily for us, the average standard of living was pretty good before the rise of the oligarchs. In Russia, that was never the case. If all you see is a bleak future, you tend to drink and/or become a skinhead. Sort of like Great Britain during the 1980s. We have a ways to go, but we are treading down the same road.

This is how democracies die. Yeah, I know. Supposedly democracies die when people start voting themselves largess from the treasuries. And that is true. But there has never been a case where the poor and middle class destroyed a democracy like that. But there are cases where plutocrats have done this. Like they are doing now in this country.
