Perhaps a little culinary and ethnic identity correction is called for here..

"Tartar", in fact, describes the sauce one applies to fish. "Tatars", on the other hand, do comprise an ethnic minority in Crimea. However, their children should not be referred to as Tatar tots.. Bon Appétit..

Not really. 'Tartar' is and alternate spelling for 'Tatar'. Tarter sauce is a direct translation from the French for 'sauce tartare'. Now exactly why the Frogs connected that with the Tatars is unknown. Since they do consider snails to be a epicurean delight, well...

I think their fondness for mushrooms and wine is at the root of this. Not so sure about you.
