How did man develop consciousness?

Neural connectivity and our size of the brain. Bipedalism and our size of brain and its increasingly complex neural network led to our sentient status.

@How did we go from living in trees (while the dinosaurs ruled the earth) to critical thinkers, philosophers and inventors? ...

When Dinosaurs roamed the earth. Chimps and human were not yet evolved, extinction of dinosaurs paved the way for new species to evolve. Humans have existed for only a tiny fraction of Earth’s history. Earth is approximately 4.55 billion years old.

The oldest known fossils is only about 3.5 billion years old, life may have begun nearly 4 billion years ago. Dinosaurs walked Earth between 230 and 65 million years ago.

The oldest known humanlike fossil is dated at 4.4 million years old, although another species, not yet confirmed as a hominid, has been dated at about 6 million years old, the earliest hominid species diverged from the ape lineage between 5 and 8 million years old. Homo sapiens sapiens, our specie is only about 40,000 years old.

@Do you think that man as we know now will go extinct in billions of years as part of the evolutionary process and a new and much evolved species will take our place on this planet? This cant be it right? Evolution is a continues and endless process?

Man will continue to intellectually and physically evolve.
