This is kind of interesting. Apparently a majority of ethnic Belarussians and Ukrainians, who claim Belarus and Ukrainian as their native language, actually speak Russian including at home. In the press you see maps showing which the percentages of residents speak Russian or Ukrainian, but those maps are based solely on self-designation. In fact, most people speak Russian. That is the case in the "stans" too. Centuries of Russian rule by either tsars or commissars have made Russian the common language. Like English and French are in w Africa.
