Hi gersh, Seven of my great Grand Parents were Irish immigrants. I've been to Ireland 3 times and love it there - they love Americans even though we speak funny. The story I got regarding the famine was as the potato blight reduced availability of the main staple in the Irish diet,starvation did occur. England was forced into expensive humanitarian relief efforts. The English then passed a head count on the English Lords who held Manors in Ireland. The head count covered the kings cost of the humanitarian activities plus a little for the queen. To reduce the tax a forced immigration of Irish People was implemented to reduce the tax bill. To date Ireland is the only UK/ EURO country that STILL HAS A SMALLER POPULATION THAN IN THE DAYS OF THE FAMINE. That's how I heard it from an Irish lady. FWIW Bob
