Harry Reid, the United States Senate Majority Leader from Nevada, could be implicated in a corruption investigation that is taking a look at state politicians and online gambling interests, according to Davis County District Attorney Troy Rawlings and Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill - as reported by ABC News on Thursday. The Utah officials claim the evidence in the investigation relates to suspect financial transactions including campaign contributions to state - as well as federal politicians - which is where Sen. Harry Reid's name comes up in the investigation.

When looking at federal-level officials like Sen. Harry Reid, Rawlings suggests that the United States Department of Justice get involved with the investigation. Rawlings said that the federal government basically should look at their own – to look at allegations of conduct or misconduct involving this federal official.

Gill agreed totally. He says there could possibly be an innocent explanation for the evidence that has cropped up, but he says there could also be a more sinister explanation. According to Gill, that’s what needs to be figured out.

Both Rawlings and Gill took over the investigation two years ago.

Utah Attorney General John Swallow was the first to face allegations of corruption, and he resigned his state position last November – after not having been in his elected position for even a year.

When it comes to Harry Reid, Rawlings and Gill are disappointed that the Department of Justice declined to take on the investigation last year – even though local officials consider the allegations to be very serious.

While the investigation – assisted by the FBI – has focused on state officials, Rawlings and Gill want the federally-elected official, Harry Reid, to be included.

Curiously, however, the United States Department of Justice thwarted the FBI's plan to include Harry Reid in the investigation.

Rawlings said, “If somebody commits crimes and there’s a nexus to the state of Utah and we can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, it doesn’t matter who they are - even a U.S. senator.”

“And no,” he asserted, “we’re not afraid of that. That’s our job!”

Utah became the home of one of the world’s largest online poker companies for a brief time in late 2009. Reportedly, poker interests had entered the political arena in an effort to prevent a crackdown on the processing of poker profits. It is that situation that led to huge contributions made to state and federal politicians' campaigns – allegedly including United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Jeremy Johnson, a key figure in the bank portion of the Utah gambling transactions who has had his own legal problems, alleges that Reid was involved in a 2010 fundraiser event at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas where online poker industry officials hosted him. He also says that Reid promised to introduce federal legislation to legalize online poker if he was elected again.

Reid introduced a bill to legalize online poker about a month after he was reelected in 2010. Quite curiously, two months after he was reelected, he withdrew the bill.

A Reid spokesperson said that the senator always opposed broad-based online gambling, but over time, he had decided to alter his longstanding opposition. The spokesperson denied that campaign contributions had anything to do with Reid’s change of heart on the online gambling issue.

Rick Caputo: Rick Scott’s ‘awful’ poll numbers make Florida Republicans queasy

Rick Shiputo: Barack Hussein Obama's 'awful' poll numbers make US Democrats apoplectic for 2014 where they once expected to sweep to major victories embracing obamacare. They expected a clean sweep in Florida-13 and got skunked. They are now wetting in their pants.

Barack Obama, Political Wrecking Ball

Peter Wehner | @Peter_Wehner03.14.2014 - 10:10 AM

By now it’s settled on most people, including Democrats, that the loss of Alex Sink to David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District was, in the words of the New York Times, “devastating” to Democrats. It’s a district Ms. Sink carried in her unsuccessful race for governor against Rick Scott, a district that Barack Obama carried in his two elections, and a district that demographically now favors Democrats. In addition, Ms. Sink raised more money and ran a better campaign than Jolly. Even Bill Clinton lent his efforts to her campaign. And yet she lost.

What should particularly alarm Democrats is that Ms. Sink, who was not in Congress in 2010 and therefore did not cast a vote in favor of the Affordable Care Act, ran what Democrats considered a “textbook” campaign when it came to dealing with ObamaCare. She said she wanted to fix it, not repeal it; and she attempted to paint Jolly as a right-wing extremist on abortion, Social Security privatization, and in wanting to repeal ObamaCare. And yet she lost.

Even someone as reflexively partisan as Paul Begala said Democrats shouldn’t try to spin this loss.

But there’s another, broader point worth making, I think. It is that Barack Obama, who was the embodiment of liberal hopes and dreams, is turning out to be a one-man political wrecking ball when it comes to his party–and to liberalism more broadly.

The evidence is scattered all around us, from the epic defeat Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm, to the (likely) lashing that awaits them in 2014, to collapsing trust and confidence in the federal government, to an agenda that is unpopular virtually across the board. Add to that the rising disorder and chaos in the world that is the predictable result of Mr. Obama’s disengaged and impotent foreign policy.

The American people, having lived with the Obama presidency for more than five years, have come to the conclusion–later, I think, than they should have–that he is incompetent, weak, and untrustworthy. And that judgment is directed not just at Mr. Obama; it is implicating his entire party.

Barack Obama produced a health-care proposal that was a liberal dream for a half-century. It is a bitter irony for him, and a predictable result for many of us, that having achieved it, it may well set back the cause of liberalism for years to come.

Liberals wanted Mr. Obama. Now they have him. And now they may be undone by him.
