you cannot have it both ways - the US and UK curtailed the armies of Italy and Germany, under Russian pressure the US restricted the buildup of E. European countries armies, in hope Russia will do same and stop their historical imperialist desires. This is why agreements where signed even if pure political.

I would not prefer to have a fully armed Germany who have the money if they want of Poland so it is indeed a dance on a "pin" and Putin knowledgeable of this is abusing power.

The Economist has a good article about a proposed solution economist.com but there are no guaranties that Russia will not move to defend the Russian speaking citizens in the Baltic's after finishing Ukraine.

Longer term Russia will pay dearly but the leadership does not give a damn about the ordinary people as long as they have the grip on power - IMHO it is a tragedy driven by stupid pride and a troubled economic situation in Russia.

All is needed is for the ME countries to help and drive down the price of crude oil this will force Russia out.

Without the economic dividend, Putin is using a Cold War-style confrontation with the West to bolster his support, building a “militarist state where everything works for the sake of defence and not people's needs”.

“Putin is taking the country down the path of the USSR which will lead to the same fate as that of the Soviet Union - the collapse of the state.”

Petrov said the crisis over Ukraine offers immediate gains for Russia, in terms of the control it will get over an area that has long played an important part in the national psyche.

“(Putin's) choice - the besieged fortress model - will work in the short term,” he said. But longer term, it is unlikely to be so clear cut.
