Ukraine prompts fresh U.S. look at use of Russian rocket engines
reuters.com

WASHINGTON Thu Mar 13, 2014 6:50pm EDT

(Reuters) - The Pentagon is going to take a fresh look at U.S. reliance on Russian-built engines to power American rockets that launch large U.S. government satellites into orbit, in light of the Ukraine crisis, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Congress on Thursday.

U.S. dependence on Russian engines has long been a concern of U.S. lawmakers, but those worries were heightened by mounting tensions between Washington and Moscow over Russia's seizure of Crimea, an autonomous region in Ukraine.

The RD 180 rocket engines, which have been built exclusively by Russia's NPO Energomash since 2002, are used by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing to power the venture's Atlas V rockets.

believe nyt is talking its own book as usual
for in order for ties to rupture there must be ties to start
from the get-go there were and are no ties merit more than footnote mention
meaning while the ties are more than existing between argentina and zimbabwe, but hardly ties
Hello TJ,

You might be surprised at the strange ties between the USA, Russia, and Ukraine. The first photo below is one I took two weeks ago at the international airport here. It's a Soviet-designed AN-124 strategic airlift cargo jet.

Team USA and NATO hire these beasts to move gigantic military cargo in and out of the countries we invade. The business is coordinated by Ruslan International, which is a joint venture between Antonov Airlines of Ulraine and Volga-Dnepr Airlines of Russia...

Below is a Volga-Dnepr AN-124 at Moffett Federal Airfield, loading California Air National Guard (ANG) helicopters for transport to Afghanistan in 2007. From Wikipedia...
