In my opinion religion was created long ago, by the Pharisees(and probably even much earlier) to control the slaves who built their empires. They had to have something to scare the slaves so bad that the slaves would not simply kill them and take their 'shit'. It had to be so doggone scary that they could get those bigassed pyramids built. The iterations of religion are basically to scare people into subservient behavior. Religion is the best scam ever perpetrated on humans. Our awareness of religion and the spirit world probably began at the time of the Upper Palaeolithic Revolution, about 50,000 years ago.
