I knew about particles popping into existence out of a vaccum from space-time. I think that the vacuum energy is going to end up being the dark matter or dark energy, although they aren't the same. When I first heard about particles coming into existence and then disappearing out of a vacuum my jaw dropped. One of the weirdest things I'd ever heard up with the double slit experiment being right up there. What you wrote about vacuum energy contains some interesting details I had not heard of before.
