"He was sentenced to death by suicide"

Suicide is a choice to die. Socrates did not have a choice. He was sentenced to death. There was no choice. If he had not carried out his own execution it would have been carried out by force.

Suicide occurs when a person can either live or die and chooses the latter. Socrates had no such choice. His death was imposed and mandatory under the law. He was executed by the State. The execution was carried out by poison which he was forced to drink or be force fed.
