You can buy a brand new Chromebox for $179 and dual boot Chrome and Ubuntu if cost is the primary concern. You would probably need a new M.2 SSD for that though, but it would be the fastest storage I/O today.

I still have a VCR I use regularly.....

I had to smile at this. I just finally parted ways with my 40+ year old 8-track player. I nearly cried when I sent all those tapes to the dump, but the player simply gave up the ghost. I don't listen to my CD's nearly as much as I did those 8 tracks. Not even sure why that is.....
