Michener used to go to the locations he was going to write about (Alaska, Hawaii, Caribbean, etc.) with a staff of researchers, usually college kids who would do the research.

In that I take listening to a book like sailing to a location, I relax and try to enjoy the full cruise. I am not adverse to leaning some natural history. But I can understand how some may find some parts less interesting.
