RENO (MINEWEB) -

Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines reported strong production increases in molybdenum, copper and tin in January of this year.

However, the country’s zinc and gold production declined during the same period.

Peru’s moly output increased 46.34% from 982 metric tons in January 2013 to 1,437 metric tons in January 2014, as copper production increased nearly 20% from 93,307 metric tons to 111,855 metric tons during the same period.

Tin production rose 26.73% from 1,590 metric tons in January 2013 to 2,015 metric tons in January of this year.

However, gold output dipped 5.8% from 11,772,587 grams (378,498 troy ounces) in January 2013 to 11,089,193 grams (356,526 troy ounces) in January 2014. The ministry said gold production declined due to lower production from Minera Yanacocha and operations owned by Barrick.

Iron ore output increased 9.21% from 589,902 metric tons in January 2013 to 644,218 metric tons in January 2014.

Lead production increased 8.01% from 20,365 metric tons in January 2013 to 21,995 metric tons in January of this year.

During the same period silver production rose 1.91% from 269,571 kilograms (8,666,909 troy ounces) to 274,725 kilograms (8,832,614 troy ounces).

However, the ministry reported that zinc output fell 9.54% from 111,529 metric tons in January 2013 to 100,885 metric tons in January 2014.
