Yes, and everyone involved is full of it.
Self determination applies to Crimea, but not Chechnya.
Furthermore, the status quo wasn't listed in the referendum.

However, a true referendum is such a strong democratic
statement, it is difficult for anyone who doesn't respect
it not to be labeled a fascist a-hole.

Imagine Canada banning French elsewhere and in Quebec, requiring the
Quebequa to speak English only, and THEN conducting a
referendum on Quebec separatist movement. Just read a lot
on it, this is not all black and white -g- Ukraine actually did that.
