I find audiobooks a perfect accompaniment to quiet chores. I cleaned the barbi this weekend in preparation for the upcoming grilling season. A couple of hours of scraping/cleaning while listening to an audiobook makes the whole process more pleasant. Working in the basement drywalling /tapimg/painting is another job suited to listening to books. It is a quiet introspective activity. Woodworking, using lnoisy electric tools, even if only for a few minutes, is too distracting and you quickly lose the continuity required in listening.
However lying back in a chair and just closing your eyes to listen....makes me fall asleep.
Listening to books on long car drives would be perfect, but it is not something I do. Long drives that is.

under the spell of a good reader.

I've been trying to improve my speaking skills, partly by paying more attention to good readers and narrators because when I listen to a recording of myself reading, I doubt I'd put anyone under a spell, I'm more liable to put them to sleep.
