Yes, weakness encourages aggression. Put has said the breakup of the USSR was a tragedy. I don't think it's nostalgia for communism, he's a Russian nationalist ... the USSR was simply the Russian empire:

I doubt Putin is done yet. The blustering of weaklings like Obama and Kerry virtually invite more moves to put the Russian empire back together.

And Russia's not the only empire that wants to rise ... China has disputes with Japan and other countries over their claim to the north, central and south China seas. I wouldn't be surprised if they sink a Japanese ship soon, knowing that Japan has no one behind them.
