Judge: End Microsoft Sales Tactic nytimes.com Jeez, the news finally breaks while I've been spending all day with my computers in pieces. It's not fair! And I got my CDR today! Plus parts for another computer! Early Christmas all around!Jackson said the possibility of Microsoft reinforcing its Windows 95 monopoly while also monopolizing the Internet browser market ''is simply too great to tolerate indefinitely until the issues are finally resolved.'' Right on, Judge!Analysts said the judge's decision could be read several ways. ''The judge did not throw Justice's case out the door. Nor did he rule with Justice and say, 'Microsoft, you're bad','' said Jim Balderston, analyst at Zona Research in Redwood City, Calif. ''He just said 'Stop, and I'm going to review it further.''' ''We think it would be dangerous to make a prediction on how the jduge is going to rule based on what the judge has done today,'' Balderson said. The suit is complex, due to the technological questions involved and the extensive filings by both sides, he added. Well, there's only one guy around here who routinely says this is all clear cut. He's the local expert, of course, but I'm encouraged by the first quote, at least the judge thinks this stuff is important. Oh, and on the Win98 issue:[Microsoft spokesman Greg ] Shaw said the decision ''refers to licensing agreements going forward'' and does not void any licensing agreements Microsoft already has. But he said its impact on Windows 98 -- a new software product due out next year and expected to fully integrate the web browser with the operating system -- ''is a little unclear.'' So, we'll see about that one. Later, guys. Cheers, Dan. P.S. Hey, is Gene Kearney here to tell me how the judge is in league with Reno to crash the markets?:-) He's a Reagan appointee, you know, but maybe he's sorting something on the side.
