The USA's paranoia about the USSR is driving them. The natural alliance should be Russia/Europe plus USA versus Islamic Jihad which is a single political entity based in Mecca with cash flow from giga$ of oil sales. China can go it alone without alliances. Russia's more natural alliance these days should be with Europe rather than China, which is not just a strategic competitor but looming right there just over the border near unused resources, with well over a billion people more than Russia, with GDP per person not so far from Russia's. Russia's population is only a tenth of China's.

<Somewhere I read that Obama didn't back off from Syria strikes because of overwhelming public opinion against them, but because he got pushback from the military about being put in the position of being allied with Al Qaeda.> At least Putin got Obama to back off in Syria, albeit helped by Obama's own troops.
