I think your statement that "a large protion of the investments today are from people who are new to the market.." may not be exactly correct. I think that "new money" tends to go to money managers or brokers. I would guess, however, that many people like the ones on this tread are deciding to take their "old money" away from useless stock brokers and money managers. These are the people who Bob say every week that the S&P 500 has almost always out-performed their "full load" mutual funds.

This type of investor could be coming into the market without the experience and discipline necessary to guide a steady course; yet armed with quite a bankroll. Like you said, 3 months sideways can seem like a bear market to someone new to managing their own funds. So, perhaps the volatility which seems so predictable is a result of inexperienced investors. This should give the gray-haired crowd a little solice...knowing that the same mentality should mean the new money will come roaring back into the market after the psychological effects of the Asian markets wears off.

As far as the Fools, why can't Bob or ABC get a real portfolio manager to sit in for him. Surely it is not too much to expect at least one talk show about money can discuss issues from a deeper perspective than "A Primer on the Stock Market". I know many of us have learned some of the real basics from BB. But he usually manages to talk to both the beginning investor as well as the more advanced ones. I just don't see that with the Fools. I think there are more qualified people who could fill his spot better.
