The Cosmos show is concentrating on fairly small changes in fairly small amounts of time.
Life on earth has been subject to change for about 4 billion years. That's a lot of time and considering that for most of that time a generation of bacteria was only a few hours, so we are looking at a few trillion generations of descent with modification.
