Actually that's a metaphysical assumption that is required to do physics in the first place. "The past can in principle be known," In principal yes, but you need a continuous chain of evidence. There is no continuous chain. All you are doing is filling in the gaps with wild conjecture "the future can be guessed, but cannot be known." Same as the past. All in all, you don't know either with any kind of scientific certainty. "As to past finches, the great .... great grandparents of finches were theropad dinosaurs." No continuous chain ( of fossils) exists. You're just guessing.
