My point was more about the concept of affordability. When the area has 20 or 25% unemployment and plenty of available housing, very lousy winters, nothing close to the scenic nature of the California coastal areas, etc.... to compare the two on the basis of earnings "affordability" seems not only a stretch but pretty dumb. Half hour drive from SF you're at Point Reyes National Seashore. Half hour drive from Rockford, where are you? Not to knock Galena or the Mississippi river basin but there's no comparison.
