>>>"I don't think gun owner ship is a human right in a civilized society.... "

You are correct. The term "human right" should be reserved for things which can neither be granted nor taken by a coercive authority, in other words they are inalienable. The right to self protection as I justified for you previously is a human right. The bill of rights was designed to protect individuals from any government authority attempting to impact human rights. I wish the framers had done a better job of seating the right to bare arms as an extention of the right to self protection; then the door wouldn't have been left open for all this haggling over it. Lots of things we now call "rights" are not human rights, but extensions from some inalienable right... and I don't think we have gotten it right (pun) in all cases.

"Self-determination is the expression of the fundamental right of human beings to engage personal power as an essential feature of their own autonomy. The right to act with regard to the well-being of self and others and of self-defense from coercion in all its forms, including the right to protect self, others, and property from harm is simply a natural and universal human condition. Personal security may be the most crucial concern in one's agency in life."
