Geographically distributed animals and geographically distributed fossils are the same issue.

Fossils come in layers. There were layers of fossils in America which were different than layers of similar age in Africa. Some fossils were similar, but the mix was very different. If you dig down until you are looking at fossils of an earlier age then suddenly the fossils of the plants and animals are the same. Darwin predicted that it would be shown that the fossil beds would be the same only if the same population of organisms inhabited both continents.
