Because, an electable lesser evil is superior to a wasted vote that just helps elect the greater evil.

It's a fairly simple calculation. When I lived in CA, I voted for Ralph Nader, a man I didn't like, but who was the ONLY candidate openly supporting shrinking the military, because I knew that Al Gore would carry CA.
In such a situation, you can vote your beliefs.
